Doña Ana :: Creative Inspirations in English & Español

I apologize for my small hiatus, I’ve been busy with work & some much needed family holidays but now i’m back on track. After so much brainstorming I decided to name my new stationery online shop “tamarindo paper co.”. I really wanted to use Doña Ana, but come to find out, Doña Ana is one of the many counties in New Mexico, so needless to say, everything from a the county community college to a real estate business has that name. I’m still keeping the name for my blog, but i’m just giving my business a different name. In case you didn’t know, tamarindo is a sweet, tropical fruit common in Latin America that is commonly consumed as a juice, which is so, so good. I also finally decided to officially open my etsy store in mid-December with a few stationery items & my 2010 desk calendar, so stay tuned!

Les pido disculpas por mi breve ausencia, es que he estado ocupado con el trabajo y los días festivos con mi familia. Pero ya estoy de nuevo añadiendole los últimos toques a mi calendario del 2010. Decidí tambien cambiarle el nombre de mi tienda de papelería a Tamarindo Paper Co. en vez de Doña Ana. Al parecer en el estado de New Mexico hay un condado que se llama tambien Doña Ana, y como podrán imaginar todas las oficinas de gobierno y hasta una empresa de bienes raíces tienen el nombre de Doña Ana. Tambien decidí por fin abrir mi tienda etsy a mediados del mes de Diciembre, asi que esten pendiente!

I’m usually not a big fan of makeover shows, well maybe home makeover shows from HGTV, but the show “Mary: Queen of Shops” from BBC has really captured my attention. The thing I love the most about this show is that the host, Mary, uses innovative graphic & interior design to help out this small businesses. My favorite episode so far is the one about this couple where the wife is also the designer/seamstress of the shop, and I loved how Mary highlighted her custom, handmade designs to appeal to customers. The store also carries other clothing found by the husband, but in order for customers to know what is handmade & what is found, they labeled each garment with either a tag that says “handmade &” or “& found”, which I think its pretty clever. The original name of the store was “Comfort & Joy”, which totally didn’t fit the store, so with the help of their children they picked “handmade & found” which I totally love. Another one of my favorites part is how she decided for the designer/seamstress to have her studio open for viewing that way customers can see the artist in action.

No soy muy fanática de shows de “makeover” pero encontré este show en BBC que se llama “Mary: Queen of Shops” donde la presentadora ayuda a pequeñas tiendas de ropa británicas, que estan a punto de la bancarrota, a renovar su imagen y sus estrategias de mercadeo. Mi episodio favorito es de esta pareja que tiene una tienda pequeña donde la esposa diseña y cose sus creaciones. Me encantó como la presentadora dió a relucir las creaciones hechas a mano por la dueña usando un nuevo nombre para la tienda “handmade & found” y usando diseño gráfico para darle una nueva imagen a su tienda. La presentadora también abrió el estudio de la dueña para que sus clientes puedieran verla en acción cosiendo sus creaciones.

Today I found this really awesome Brazilian illustrator Yasmin Mundaca who is based out of Cleveland, OH who has the coolest illustrations. I love her bold sense of color & also her vintagy illustration style, which reminds of Alice in Wonderland. Check out her work in her etsy shop, Mundo Mundaca.

Hoy encontré a esta ilustradora Brazileña que se llama Yasmin Mundaca que actualmente reside en Cleveland, Ohio. Yasmin tiene unas ilustraciones fenomenales con colores brillantes y un estilo que me recuerda a el cuento de Alicia en el País de las Maravillas. I decided to change my friday finds to weekly finds since I want to give myself the freedom of posting amazing inspirations whenever I find them (when it comes to a creative mind we tend to work on our own creative fairy hits us). This awesome find is probably not a find for many since her work is pretty well known in the creative community, but I still wanted to post it because Ms. Anna Bond’s work from RIFLE design never ceases to amaze me. I just adore her wedding invitations, each one seems like a little story book of the lucky couple. The great news is that she is opening her online store soon to everybody’s delight (especially mine).

Decidí cambiar mis “friday finds” por “artista de la semana” ya que me quiero dar la libertad de escribir sobre todos los artitas talentosos que inspiran apenas los encuentre. La artista de la semana de seguro ya la conocen pero quize de todos modos escribir sobre la artista Anna Bond de RIFLE design porque sus ilustraciones me fascinan. Me encanta como cada uno de sus invitaciones de boda parece un libro de cuentos encantado sobre la pareja. Lo bueno también es que Anna, pronto abrirá su propia tienda virtual con sus ilustraciones espectaculares.

¡Hola my friends! Sorry for the long pause, I’ve been slaving at work getting all the 2010 Christmas products ready for the stores, and at home, I’ve been drawing, coloring & doing some more drawing. But in the midst of all of that, I still have time to peruse the internet & find amazing artists that tickle my creative bone. And this time I found Sollinero, a graphic designer from Buenos Aires, Argentina, that does really cool vinta-gy silkscreened illustrations.

¡Hola mis amigos! Disculpen la corta ausencia, lo que pasa es que he estado ocupado en el trabajo diseñando los productos para la Navidad del 2010, y en mi casa, he estado ocupada dibujando y coloreando mis productos para tienda virtual. Pero en medio de todo eso, todavia tengo tiempo para encontrar diseñadores talentosos que me inspiran, como la Srta. Sollinero, una diseñadora gráfica de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ella diseña y dibuja sus ilustraciones y despúes los imprime usando el metodo de la serígrafia.

I found via the Uppercase magazine, this really cool Spanish illustrator & designer, Blanca Gómez from Cosas Mínimas. Blanca creates this really cool & classic vintage illustrations that reminds me of the Pink Panther old cartoons. She also happens to create paper goodies that showcase her cool illustration style.

Por medio de la revista Uppercase, encontré a la ilustradora y diseñadora, Blanca Gómez de Cosas Mínimas. Las ilustraciones de Blanca tienen un estilo único que me recuerda a los a los comiquitas clásicas de la Pantera Rosada. Blanca también incorpora sus ilustraciones en sus propios productos de papelería.

One of my favorite stationery designers is Mrs. Ivana from Love Ardently (who happened to also graduate from the same fabulous design department that I graduated from, UCO) just launched her etsy shop with custom invitations & stationery. I love her very simple, classic & colorful style. She also does really beautiful custom monograms.

Una de mis diseñadora favoritas, que a la vez se gradúo de la misma universidad mia, UCO,  es la dulce Ivana de Love Ardently. Ivana acaba de abrir su tienda Etsy donde ella ofrece sus diseños únicos en invitaciones y otros artículos de papelería. Me encanta su estilo tan simple y clásico con colores brillantes. Ella también diseña monogramas para invitaciones de bodas.

My co-worker just sent me a pic of the cutest Christmas ornaments courtesy of Anthropologie. If you are a typography, Christmas & fuzzy sweaters fanatic, this ornaments are so right for your next Christmas tree.

Mi compañera de trabajo me mandó esta foto de estos lindos adornitos de Navidad que venden en Anthropologie. Si te eres fanático de la tipografía, la Navidad y de los súeteres gruesos de lana estos adornitos se verán divinos en tu próximo arbolito de Navidad.

Today I’m celebrating one of the two independence days of my home country, Panama. You might be wondering how does one country have two independence days, but Panama was actually ruled by two countries, first Spain, and then Colombia (which we actually call a separation not an independence). In order to celebrate it, I want you to check out this really cool etsy store, Mola Mama, that sells the most recognized Panamanian textile art called the Mola. The Mola is done by hand by the beautiful women of the Kuna tribe in Panama. They do everything from the material gathering, design & final production.

Hoy estoy celebrando unas de las dos independencias de mi patria querida, Panamá. Ustedes se preguntaran porque Panamá tiene dos independencias, bueno Panamá, como muchos países latinoamericanos, era colonia Española, y despúes de su independencia, pasó a ser parte de la Gran Colombia. Pero el 3 de noviembre declaramos nuestra separación de Colombia y nos convertimos en la hermosa República de Panamá. Y para conmemorar este día encontré esta tienda virtual de molas llamado, Mola Mama, que vende el arte textil más reconocido de mi patria. Las molas son diseñadas y cosidas a mano por nuestras bellas mujeres de la tribu Kuna.
